Wrapping Up 2011 Read-a-Thon Giveaway

I am hosting a giveaway for the Wrapping Up 2011 Readathon. To check out all the other stuff going on for this read-a-thon you can go here. I wanted to give you guys a chance to read a book I was planning on reading during this read-a-thon. So I will be giving away an ARC of Winter Towns by Stephen Emond. It is not only told with words but also has awesome pictures. I've heard people compare it to Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and I absolutely loved that book.

Winter Town

To be entered to win this book I am holding a small challenge. Make a sentence using the titles of books. I would like it if you could take a picture, make a post with it on your blog or twitter and leave a comment with the link. If you can't post it then just leave a comment with the actual sentence below.
I did this for another read-a-thon earlier in the year and this is what I came up with:

Read-a-thon mini challenge #5
Create a sentence using titles of three books.
My sentence:
The body finder ruined dash and lily’s book of dares.

It's not the best but right now all my books are being used since I decided to make a Christmas tree out of books. So I'm excited to see what you guys come up with :)

Giveaway Rules:
-leave a comment with link to challenge post
-You must be participating in the readathon and
have updated your progress at least once to enter.
-No need to follow but would be appreciated :)
-Giveaway ends Dec 31 11:59pm

Cover Reveal: Chosen Ones

What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?
Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.
Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.
But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

This book sounds incredibly interesting. The concept makes me want to go running and pick this book up. Then there is also the cover. The reason why we are all here today. I love the cracked background, her dress and even the letters used for the title. It is simply beautiful. Let me know what you guys think of the cover! :)

Interview: Kelley York Author of Hushed

If you could describe Hushed in 6 words what would they be?
A dark look into the human psyche. (7 words. Close enough?)

What was your inspiration for Hushed?
I’m very character-oriented. I had the idea for Archer, and the rest of the story stemmed from him. When you have a solid, interesting character, it’s really easy to build their story.

Archer and Evan are so different yet both are so capturing. What was your favorite aspect to write of each character?
I loved Evan’s quirky sense of humor and his goofiness. For Archer, it was his quiet affection. The way he was so hesitant to show Evan that he cared, because the idea of caring about anyone who wasn’t Vivian was so foreign to him.

Not a lot of young adult books feature main characters during their college age. How did you decide you wanted your main character to be out of high school and on his own?
I like writing for the “new adult” part of YA, where characters are still teenagers, but have—or are trying to—strike out on their own. It’s a hard sell to a lot of publishers, though I’m not sure why. Most teens I’ve seen don’t at all mind reading about someone who’s in college if the story itself is interesting. I like having the freedom of my characters living their lives without parents directly overhead, but at the same time, living on their own is brand new and a bit intimidating.

Did you enjoy writing through the eyes of a male character? Are you ever planning on writing a novel with a female main character?
I do have a soft-spot for the male POV and I’m not sure why. I have written from a female POV, however. My first book alternated between a girl and a guy, and my third book was entirely from a female POV. My current work in progress is another one that alternates from a brother and sister’s viewpoint.

Who was your favorite character to write? Which character did you have the most difficulty with?
Archer was my favorite. I love how damaged he is and the way the world looks so skewed through his eyes. He’s such a sad boy. Evan could be difficult in a sense, simply because he was such a normal guy tossed into this insane situation, and yet maintained such a calm, logical outlook on things.

When you’re writing do you snack on something and/or listen to music or do you just focus on the task at hand? What do you use to focus?
I don’t eat when I write. In fact, if I get in the groove, I’ll write and write and forget to stop and eat. I do listen to music, though; it helps me focus and drowns out the rest of the world.

Archer is very organized and basically OCD about everything in his life. Are you more like Archer or more like Vivian, care free and somewhat disorganized?
A combination of the two. I have my little things I’m really obsessive about (locking doors, for instance), and I’m decently organized. But my desk will get cluttered until I’m like “I can’t handle it!” and clean everything really well. It’ll stay that way for a few weeks, then repeat process...

What is your all-time favorite book? One that you recommend to everyone and encourage others to read it?
If we’re talking classics, then THE LAST UNICORN by Peter S. Beagle, or MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH by Robert C. O’brien. I’m always stunned by how few people have read the books, even if they’ve seen the movies. For more recent books, Jay Asher’s 13 REASONS WHY or Hannah Moskowitz’s INVINCIBLE SUMMER are must-reads.

We hear you like pets? What was the first pet you ever had?
I love pets, even when they drive me crazy. I have cats, rats, hamsters... My very first pet, when I was about four or five, was a teddy bear hamster named Chewy. After that, it was a tabby cat named Oliver.

Will you tell us something that a lot of people might not know about you?
I spent three-ish years living in Indiana and couldn’t stand it. Then I moved back to California, and I can’t stand it here anymore, either. (A lot changes in 3 years!) I want to move up to Washington or Oregon, or out to Maine on the East coast.

Thank you for dropping by to answer some of our questions. Can’t wait to hear about some of your other projects in the near future :)
Thank you for having me!! :)

seat waiting to see what would happen next! Bottom line, this was
unputdownable!!!' --- YA Fantasy Guide ---

'How exciting that we live in a time when gay teen protagonists can be
just as screwed up as straight ones -- and their stories just as creepy!'

Author Bio:

Kelley was born and raised in central California, where she still resides
with her lovely wife, daughter, and an abundance of pets. (Although she
does fantasize about moving across the globe to Ireland.) She has a
fascination with bells, adores all things furry - be them squeaky, barky
or meow-y - is a lover of video games, manga and anime, and likes to
pretend she's a decent photographer. Her life goal is to find a real
unicorn. Or maybe a mermaid.

Within young adult, she enjoys writing and reading a variety of genres
from contemporary with a unique twist, psychological thrillers,
paranormal/urban fantasy and horror. She loves stories where character
development takes center stage.

He's saved her. He's loved her. He's killed for her.

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from
what happened when they were kids, so he's never stopped trying to protect
her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when
hopping from one toxic relationship to another - Archer is always there,
waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer
without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more
Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders
Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn
him in if she doesn't get what she wants...And what she wants is Evan's
death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

Follow Friday

Follow Friday is a meme held by Parajunkie. It's where you answer the weekly question and go check out other blogs and what they answered. It's a great way to meet new bloggers :)

Q: When you’ve read a book, what do you do with it? (Keep it, give it away, donate it, sell it, swap it..?)

I usually keep all my books...*shameful face* I love my books and I feel like all of us bloggers are the same way about our books. At least I know I love being able to go to my shelf and pick up a great read. Now if I didn't like the book I might lend it to someone and if they like it I tell them that they can keep it. It might not have worked for me but someone else could like it. All in all, I LOVE all of my books and they usually stick around on my shelves. I even have books from when I was little.

What do you guys do? Let me know below and leave your links so I can go visit and follow your blogs.

ALSO, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY!!!!! *rolls around in confetti* I am officially not a teen anymore. I am TWENTY!! But no matter what, I will never be too old for young adult books :P

Review: Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

This book...oh this book. From the first line it picks up with a rush. There is no stopping to let you think about what is going on.
"My eyes snapped open as the freakish sixth sense kicked my fight or flight response into overdrive"
Jennifer creates these amazing characters that capture your heart from the moment you meet them. Alex lost her mother and has to live on her own. That is, until the covenant sends Sentinels to find her. Alex is witty and never lets anyone tell her what to do. She is definitely my type of  heroine. There are no rules or boundaries that can keep her from achieving what she wants and I love that.
"'What?' Caleb's mouth dropped open. 'You can sneak out. You were like the queen of sneaking out."
Then there is Aiden...*le sigh*. He is one of the the Sentinel and a pretty awesome one at that. After Alex comes back to the covenant he takes it upon himself to help her catch up on all the training she's missed. This is not good for them. He is a pure and she is a half-blood. Nothing is ever supposed to happen between them but...uhm...we all know that's never going to work. Especially when he comes out and says things like this:
"'You're always so alive, even when you're going through something that would darken the souls of most.' He stopped there, becoming aware of what he'd said. The hollows of his cheeks flushed"
Seriously? Can anyone blame Alex? I sure can't :) Aiden is just an all around awesome character. He's sweet and dangerous all mixed into one bundle. Then there's Seth...eeeekkkk...he is so funny and sarcastic and witty and I just looooove him. I really hope we get more of him in the next book!!!

Alex also has a best friend, and while I know many young adult books are really slacking in the best friend department, this one is amazing. While I read this I found myself wishing I had a real life Caleb. He is always there for Alex even when it involves risking his own life. Also, he isn't in love with her. I love that because I feel like it is all too common for the best guy friend to be in love with the heroine. That trend needs to stop in young adult books because the best friend always gets his heart crushed. I really hope this doesn't change in this series. My favorite Caleb line (Spoiler!!! I will put it in white. If you want to read it you can highlight the quote):
"'It's okay, all right? Look. What are friends for if they can't share a few hours with psychotic daimons? We can look at it as a bonding experience.'"
On to the plot. The whole thing is one huge whirlwind. There isn't one slow moment and I loved every bit of it.  I really enjoyed the mythology in this book so if you're a fan of books that involve mythology this is the book for you. Also, can I just say...those daimons are scary as hell. Jennifer really worked her magic when creating these awful creatures.
Now, if you haven't read this, go...now...GO I tell you!!! I promise you will not be disappointed :) I just can't believe I have to wait until April, 3 2012 to read the sequel, Pure. I need it now :P
