Review: TEN by Gretchen McNeil

Ten
SHHHH!Don't spread the word!Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island. You do NOT want to miss it.
It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.
But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.
Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

I haven't read Gretchen McNeil's previous book (because I'm a scardy cat when it comes to exorcisms) but everyone loves it so much that when I read the synopsis for this one, I knew I had to pick it up. And I'm so glad it didn't let me down. On the contrary, it threw it's hook and reeled me right into it's pages.

This is definitely a book that all mystery lovers have to read. I spent the entire time speculating who the killer was and pretty much blamed a handful of characters. It kept me guessing up to the very end and even then, it was the person I least expected. Although, I haven't read the original and I heard that if you have, it will be easier to guess who the killer is.

From the very first chapter the book gives off an eerie vibe. The setting was one of my favorite aspects of the book. I was enthralled by the way the setting gave the story a new feel. It was rainy and gloomy but that was the perfect setting for this book.

When it comes to characters, Gretchen does an excellent job. At the beginning I was having a hard time separating the two best friends. They have names that both start with M and I kept on having to put extra effort into identifying them but soon you see that they couldn't be more different. And in that time where you become acquainted with them you also notice something else. Meg and Minnie might be best friends but you can clearly tell that when things get rough they have a lot of tension between them. They aren't the only ones though, each character has it's flaws. They all have secrets they want to keep hidden from everyone else. But as the book progresses you get an inside look at what each person is hiding and I loved how Gretchen McNeil did that.

This is a prefect book to pick up on a rainy day. The suspense builds up leaving you unable to set the book down until you finally know who the culprit really is. It's a one-sit read that will keep you hooked until you finally finish the last page. If you're looking for a quick mystery, then I highly recommend TEN.

  1. I'm totally in the minority on this one, because I really didn't care much for TEN. I had a hard time separating ANY of the characters, which made it difficult to care about them, even when they died. There were other issues for me, too, but I guess I'm just super picky. I'm glad you found a read that worked for you!

  2. I agree with Susan while it was an enjoyable read I didn't care much for it. Things like the way the romance was played into it and how certain thoughts were thrown in during important moments just ruined it for me.

  4. I have Possessed but I've yet to start it. I'm not a big fan of scary stuff either, like you, I'm a scaredy cat. I've pretty much avoided Ten because although I can handle supernatural horror, murderers like the Texas Chainsaw guy or Halloween's Michael Meyers tend to creep me out the most. However I feel like if I started this one I'd easily get hooked. I love that the mystery element was done well and that you didn't know the killer to the end. Great review :)
