The future world is at peace.
Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique gift—the ability to enter people’s dreams and memories using technology developed by her mother—to help others relive their happy memories.
But not all is at it seems.
Ella starts seeing impossible things—images of her dead father, warnings of who she cannot trust. Her government recruits her to spy on a rebel group, using her ability to experience—and influence—the memories of traitors. But the leader of the rebels claims they used to be in love—even though Ella’s never met him before in her life. Which can only mean one thing…
Someone’s altered her memory.
Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping a war she didn’t even know was happening. But if someone else has been inside Ella’s head, she cannot trust her own memories, thoughts, or feelings.
So who can she trust?

Oh my God! Why did I ever think I could put off reading this? When I got the email to join the blog tour for The Body Electric I had a brief second of doubt as to whether I should sign up or not. As of this moment, having just stepped out of a compelling action-packed story about love and rebellion, I'm so glad I went for it and decided to join.

Previously, I had picked up Beth Revis' other series, Across the Universe, and I just couldn't get into it at the moment. That was not something I faced while reading The Body Electric. From the very start I was absolutely hooked. The book starts with a flashback where we get our first glimpse into the surreal world where the main character, Ella, lives. This is a world where you can go into other people's dreams, you can relive memories when you want to, and strange things are happening with new technology that's being developed. There is a lot of tech talk in this story, a lot of political turmoil and talk of war and rebellion, but Beth Revis does this so well that it didn't feel like I was being overwhelmed. The story managed to keep me interested throughout. Everything is explained with extreme detail and in a way that the readers will understand.

One thing I did have a problem with was remembering how the new world was set up and picturing it in my head. The new world Beth Revis created is so intricate, with details of how the setting has changed as the years have passed, where countries are now placed, and what buildings are where. There's a map in the front of the book that shows exactly how everything looks after a huge war destroyed our actual, present-day Earth, but since I had the e-book of The Body Electric I couldn't keep flipping back and forth. I recommend getting the physical version of this book, not only so you can reference the map as you read along, but also because look at that gorgeous cover. It's beautiful and it ties in so well with the story. I find that few covers tie in with the story nowadays but this one does it in a gorgeous way that will definitely make it's appearance on my shelf.

The characters were likable, they weren't my absolute favorite characters ever, but they weren't annoying. Their reactions to things that were happening were realistic, and the main character wasn't making stupid decisions every other page. The love interest, Jack, was understanding and not pushy at all when Ella couldn't remember him. There were a few chapters where he kept asking her if she remembers him, which got a bit repetitive, but at the same time understandable. I'm sure that if someone I loved had forgotten all about our relationship I would be in denial as well.

I can't stress enough how action packed The Body Electric was. The chapters are short, so you fly through them and almost each chapter has a major cliffhanger. The made me keep going late into the night under the guise of "one more chapter". It sort of reminded me of Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris and Altered by Jennifer Rush with regards to the pacing and action. So If you've previously tried Beth Revis' other series, Across the Universe, and didn't enjoy it I still recommend picking up The Body Electric. It's action packed, twists at every corner, and when you think you know exactly what's going on...you know NOTHING.

  1. Great review, Audris! I love books with maps that help you visualize, but it's hard on ebook especially with my old clunker that takes 20 seconds just to change the page haha! It sounds like a really interesting world and exciting story, though! Glad you liked it! :)
