Reading Funk...

As I write this I can honestly tell you that this reading funk is not as fun as it sounds. (It is in no way related to Uptown  Funk and is not dance move inducing.) Instead, I can tell you that it sucks. It sucks so much because I don't think this is the same thing as a reading slump. To me, a reading slump is when you don't have any desire to read or pick up a book. The name says it all. You kind of slump around with no desire to read. That's not at all how I feel. I WANT TO READ. I WANT TO READ MORE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. But nothing jumps out at me. I want to read everything at once and also nothing at all. It's the strangest mood and I don't like it one bit.

The thing is that if someone were to look at my reading challenge on Goodreads, they wouldn't even think I'm in this funk because I've still read things. Just not anything I've really been invested in. In the month of May I finished 8 things, which isn't bad, but I've also started 6 books and just stopped part of the way through.

These are all the books I started and just gave up on:

Tiger Lily Alienated (Alienated, #1) Uninvited (Uninvited, #1) Wait for You (Wait for You, #1) The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy: A Handbook for Girl Geeks The Elite (The Selection, #2)

(And I'm pretty sure there are more).

The weird thing is that they're good books. I was actually enjoying them while I read, but the moment I set them down there was nothing pulling me back into the story.

This creates a cycle. A very stressful cycle. I start a book, I leave it halfway, I start another book, I leave that one partly read. By the time I've started the third book I already feel so guilty about the other two that I can't enjoy that one. This leads me to leave that one half way, but I want to read, so I start a fourth one. And so forth. Do you see the problem? The weight of those unfinished books slows me down on my reading.

The other problem is that this makes me think, "I can't find anything on my shelves that I want to read", so I go out and buy more books, but the more books I buy, the more overwhelming my TBR becomes.

This seems to happen to me every year, and every year I seem to forget how I got out of it the year before. When my reading mood suffers, my blog also suffers. I'm going to try to blog a bit about other things in June. Not focus completely on books, this is still a book blog, but I'll be doing some traveling and I think it will be refreshing to talk about some of the other things going on in my life.

How do you get out of this reading funk? Or does this even happen to you? This very well could just be something weird I go through.

Let me know if you go through this and what helps you get over it!

  1. I'm so sorry to see that you're in a reading slump. I've been in those before. The thing I do is just ride it out and turn my attention to Netflix or schoolwork until a book comes along that I know I'll read and love. I know that sometimes reading a book you've read in the past and loved also helps. Hopefully you get out of this soon!

    1. I've been marathoning episodes of Supernatural in the meantime. It also helps that I've been traveling so that has cleared my mind of books. I'm going to try to read some series I know I love and see if that works! :) Thanks for the suggestions.

  2. UUUUGH I hate this so much. I know what you mean - wanting to read everything and nothing. It sucks. SO MUCH. I honestly don't have anything that I do to make it stop...I guess I just take a break? For like a week or so. Then I try to force my way into a book. If I don't start getting into it, then I take another break. Or that one book I can't get into will make me realize I actually want to read this other book...and that will set everything. off. OH, our reading brains are complicated. *le sigh*

I hope you find that magic spell-breaking book soon!! Let us know what happens and when you find your reading groove again! <3

  3. I know the feeling, for 2015 I set a goal of reading more and started off strong but slumped a little when I didn't enjoy some books as much as others. One of my faves is one I just finished called The Dragonfly Guardian by Angela Antaloczy, the story was fresh and had lots of twists, it never went where I suspected it would! That def helped get me out of my reading funk. Good luck!

    1. I started out the year so strong too! I don't really know what happened. But I checked out The Dragonfly Guardian and it sounds very intriguing.

  4. Just take a step back :) Forcing yourself to read isn't going to work. Do all the other things you want to do and I bet you will pick up a book soon enough!
