Review: The Catastrophic History of You & Me

The Catastrophic History of You and Me
Dying of a broken heart is just the beginning.... Welcome to forever.
BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.
But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.
With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?
When Brie dies suddenly at the age of fifteen she's forced to leave everything she's ever loved. The question is, what comes after death? Soon she finds out there is so much to life after death.

I really grew to love all of the characters Jess Rothenberg created. The way they describe Brie and her 3 best friends is by comparing each of them to a Disney princess. Sadie is Princess Jasmine, Emma is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Tess is Ariel and OF COURSE, Brie is Belle from Beauty and the Beast. When it comes to her best friends Brie says, "I was so lucky to have them. No, I was more than lucky. I was the luckiest." From the start I really connected with Brie. She's just a the average girl trying to find her way through this mess of life and death. Plus...she loves watching Beauty and the Beast...yeah, that sealed the deal. Patrick is her guide through the Forever and he is a cutie. He's sarcastic and hilarious and there is this amazing banter that goes on between him and Brie. It's perfect. But he's also incredibly sweet and I love it. Then there's the boy that broke her heart, Jacob. From the start I knew there was so much more to this story. My feelings for Jacob shifted all the while but oddly enough at no time did I hate him. There had to be more and I was very intrigued as to how everything would play out.

Brie and Patrick are in this place between heaven and Earth where anything can happen. Brie actually makes wishes that just come true. Then, it all changes when revenge comes into the picture. Revenge on Jacob. The story itself is so quirky and fun but sad and touching at the same time. It was so different from your average young adult book. Brie has to go through all the steps of the grieving process starting with denial. I thought it would be fun and light. I mean, Brie dies of a broken heart, that itself shows you how unique the story is but it was anything but light. Every character touched me and in the end I was very happy with how everything turned out.

If you guys have been doubting whether to pick this one up, I'm here to tell you that you definitely need to.
