February Book Club Wrap-Up

This is our monthly wrap up for the previous month's book! We'll let you know what we thought about the story, characters and everything in between!

If You Find MeTitle: If You Find Me

Author: Emily Murdoch

Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

Release Date: March 26th, 2013

Goodreads Summary:

There are some things you can’t leave behind…
A broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one bright spot being Carey’s younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother disappears for good, and two strangers arrive. Suddenly, the girls are taken from the woods and thrust into a bright and perplexing new world of high school, clothes and boys.
Now, Carey must face the truth of why her mother abducted her ten years ago, while haunted by a past that won’t let her go… a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason Jenessa hasn’t spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or risk watching her new life come crashing down.

Audris' Thoughts:

As soon as Jacquelyn sent me a picture with our book choices for February I knew If You Find Me was going to be the one. From all the rave reviews I had read, to Judith from Paper Riot being its very own cheerleader, there was never any doubt I would enjoy this heartbreaking story. Maybe enjoy isn't the word I should be using to describe my feelings towards If You Find Me, so let's break this down.

Carey and Jenessa are characters that will steal your heart. I can guarantee that they will strike a cord with almost everyone. The reason being that these two young girls have spent the entirety (or almost the entirety when it comes to Carey) of their lives living away from civilization and being hidden away in the woods by their mother. So when they finally get brought back into the real world they don't know the simplest of things, they don't know how to use a toothbrush, they don't know what fries are, they don't know how to open the trunk of a car. These are simple commodities that we are so used to, we don't think twice about them, so when I read about how much Carey struggles with these things it tore my heart out.

The story itself is very short and obviously more character driven than plot driven, but there is also some mystery in the mix, so if that's something that interests you, I recommend checking it out. I actually almost gave If You Find Me 3.5 out of 5 stars because, aside from the characters being great, there were some parts that I found to be unrealistic. I don't want to delve too much into this, but I just want to say that their level of education was something I struggled to believe.

In the end, I decided to give it 4 stars because the ending was absolutely fantastic. It was one of the best done endings I've read in a long time. The ending unravels so well and so heartbreakingly. There were some parts of the way this novel ended that I was expecting, but there were definitely others that caught me by surprise. It was exceptionally real and displayed the characters strengths perfectly.

Jacquelyn's Thoughts

I am really happy that we picked this one up for the month of February. It was always a book I was so interested in so I was more than happy to finally be able to read it. Lots of this story focused on family and survival which I thought was really interesting considering most survival stories do not focus a ton on family as well. In YA as a whole, not many books mention or even have a minor focus on family so I thought that aspect of the book was quite nice and refreshing. I also loved the survival and mystery aspects of this book. It was quite short and you would think since it is a survival and mystery type book, it would need to be longer but that wasn't the case. The author did a nice job of condensing things without leaving major plot holes and/or details out.

I really enjoyed the characters and their development throughout the story. For me to enjoy a book, I need it to have some really great and well developed characters and this book provided that. I ended up giving this book 4 out of 5 stars since I thought the plot and characters were awesome and the little mystery included was great as well. I also thought the end was phenomenal and I felt like it was just the perfect way to end this book. Also, I read this in a day so it was a really and entertaining read.

If you are looking for a survival/mystery novel that surrounds around family dynamics and such I would really recommend this book. It had lovely characters and it is such a quick read that you can just plow through it. I am really glad we read this and I look forward to reading any of Emily's future works.

November Wrap-Up & December TBR

November was a very busy month for me, between finishing up classes, taking exams, writing papers, the holidays and organizing events for the different clubs I'm in, I hardly had any reading time. While I didn't read as much as I wanted to I did read some awesome books!

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Lyla Payne

Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

If you missed any of the reviews you can check them out here:

I also watched a lot of tv this month...WHOOPS. Most of it was when I had any free time in between things. I would pull out my phone and sneak in an episode here and there. So some new shows I started (and finished LOL.) were The 100 and How to Get Away With Murder. They're both fantastic shows and are guaranteed to suck you right in. I'll probably be doing a Welcome to the Fangirl Side post on them soon because OMG I'm so obsessed. I already got most of my friends hooked on them too.

DECEMBER TBR

December...DECEMBER. I can't believe it's the last month of the year already! Not that I'm complaining. This month is super exciting for me since I finally graduate college and I'm also turning 23. TWENTY-THREE. I have a feeling this is going to be a very caps filled post because...FEELS.

Anyway, on to the books. I always fail at my To Be Read lists because I'm an independent woman and I read what I want. Just kidding! Most of the time it's because I have no time. This month I hope to stick to my list since there are some really great books I want to pick up before the year is over.

Sharp ObjectsBlack IceLandline
Let it Snow: Three Holiday RomancesMy True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories

These are just the ones I for sure want to read this month. I'm leaving space for the books I want to read for the Debut-a-Thon and some books I've already started but want to finish before the new year.

Have you read any of these? What is on your December TBR?

July Wrap-Up (The Month of New Things)

I had a pretty great reading month in July. The blog took a back seat to reading, but to be honest, I'm completely okay with that. I started this blog because of my love for reading, and if I have to put reading second in order to keep up my posts, then I'm not doing what fills me with joy. Now that that's out of the way, here's what I read in July!

Unbreakable (The Legion, #1) American Born Chinese All Lined Up (Rusk University, #1) A Monster Calls 24/7 The Great Gatsby Dangerous Boys Partials (The Partials Sequence, #1)

I participated in the Booktubeathon this month and it really helped me branch out my reading. For example, I read an ADULT novel. WHAT? I know, and I enjoyed it! I also read The Great Gatsby (listened to it on audio and followed along with my physical copy) and A Monster Calls, both which I had been meaning to read for the longest time. I'm probably going to be doing separate posts for Dangerous Boys, A Monster Calls and Unbreakable so look out for that.

What did you read this month? Have you read any of these? Let me know!

Happy New Year! + Updates!

I'm currently sitting on my super comfy couch, cuddled up in the softest blanket and I couldn't be happier. I've been traveling for the past 22 days and by the end of it I was incredibly homesick, to say the least. I had no wi-fi and no phone service for most of the time and although I got to visit some amazing places (Cancun, Dominican Republic and Miami) I missed blogging from the comfort of my own home.

But now I'm here and I have some updates. While I was gone I had a pretty awesome reading month with two four star books and three five star ones.

The Book of Broken Hearts Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1) Eleanor & Park The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4) The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)

  1. The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler: 4/5 stars
  2. Ruby Read by Kerstin Gier: 4/5 stars
  3. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell: 5/5 stars
  4. The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan: 5/5 stars
  5. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken: 5/5 stars
So to say I had a great reading month would be an understatement. The Darkest Minds was one of my favorite books of the year and I can hardly wait to get my hands on Never Fade.

Bookish Goals 2014

  1. Goodreads Goal: 75 books
  2. Finish 12 series: I can't tell you the number of series I've started and then neglected to pick up the second book. I hope to remedy this and I've already picked out most of the series I actually want to finish but I think I might save that for a separate post.
  3. Start 6 series: I've chosen these as well and my goal is to start and finish six series that everyone recommends.
  4. Read what I want to read, when I want to read it: I'm not going to try to stick with monthly lists because I tend to always deviate from them and then I feel guilty. I'll probably still pick some books just so I can have some structure but they'll just be suggestions.
  5. Participate in Epic Recs: I'm hoping to stick with it monthly because I like the idea of branching out and trying books other people loved.
  6. Book Buying: This year I'm going to set up a budget specifically for book buying and I'm going to try to only buy books that I know I'll read this year.
  7. Tackle the TBR: Try to read more of my own books. I have to read 2 of my books before I can buy one.
  8. Blogging: Post when I can and not worry if I can't post as frequently. I have to learn to divide my time between school, blogging, social life and work.
So with that, I wish you all a happy new year and hope 2014 brings loads of awesomeness into your lives. What are some of your blogging goals? Link me in the comments and I'll check them out! Also, let me know if you would like to see pictures from my travels and I'll put together a post :)

November Wrap-Up & Currently Reading

November was super busy with school and work. My French classes (I'm currently taking four of them) really picked up speed and I felt like I was writing papers, takings exams, reading books, and doing presentations every other day. Any free time I had went into reading so I slacked a bit on the blogging front but I did manage to finish 5 books this month:

Unchosen (The Reaper Diaries, #2) The Selection (The Selection, #1) The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3) Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer Things I Can't Forget

I already have reviews for Unchosen and Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer on here and will be reviewing The Selection and The Titan's Curse soon. I really enjoyed Things I Can't Forget (I gave it 4/5 stars) but for some reason I can't seem to get my thoughts together enough for a review.

I also started a few others that I hope to finish this month.

At the moment, I'm currently reading:

The Book of Broken Hearts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) Ruby Red (The Ruby Red Trilogy, #1) The Naturals

I know, I know, it's a lot but I'm more than half way through each of these and really liking them, I just don't have ANY time.

Also, it's my birthday month and I'm going to Cancun!!! So that's exciting. What are you currently reading, or what did you read last month? Any fun plans for December?
